Great Connections and Big Ideas at SubOptic ‘25

The submarine cable industry descended on Lisbon, Portugal this year for SubOptic '25, and Subsea Data Systems was well represented by President Matt Fouch and CTO Steve Lentz.

SubOptic, held once every three years, is widely regarded as the premier global event for the submarine telecommunications industry. The conference brings together thousands of engineers, executives, and innovators to share the latest developments in undersea cable technology, network design, and installation techniques. For Matt and Steve, it was an invaluable opportunity to engage with the customers and vendors and stay at the forefront of technological advancement.

Beyond the technical sessions and networking on the exhibition floor, Matt met with Carlos Paulino and the team from OEID (Observatório dos Ecossistemas e Infraestruturas Digitais). These discussions explored potential collaborations at the intersection of digital infrastructure and ecosystem monitoring, reflecting the growing recognition that submarine cables can serve dual purposes—connecting people while also providing critical data about our ocean environments. Subsea Data Systems looks forward to continued collaboration with Portuguese partners to expand the reach and impact of SMART Cable technology.

Lisbon provided a stunning backdrop for three days of intensive learning and collaboration. From emerging cable technologies to sustainability initiatives and next-generation network architectures, SubOptic '25 offered a comprehensive look at where the industry is heading.
