Driving Innovation in Seismology: Highlights from the Eastern Section SSA Meeting

Subsea Data Systems President Matt Fouch wrapped up a fantastic Eastern Section Seismological Society of America (ES-SSA) meeting, hosted this year at Saint Louis University. The gathering provided an excellent opportunity to connect and reconnect with colleagues, collaborators, and new partners across the seismological community.

Although the ES-SSA meeting is smaller in scale than some national conferences, it continues to punch well above its weight in terms of impact, innovation, and community engagement. Participants showcased creative applications of seismology that extended far beyond standard earthquake analyses - demonstrating how the field continues to evolve in exciting and interdisciplinary directions.

Subsea Data Systems was proud to share insights on the SMART Cable concept and ongoing efforts to integrate subsea sensing technologies into broader geophysical and environmental monitoring systems. The session sparked valuable discussions about how ocean-based data infrastructure can strengthen seismic research and early warning capabilities.

Events like ES-SSA continue to highlight the strength and creativity of the seismological community - and the power of innovation when researchers, engineers, and data scientists come together to explore what’s next.
